've tried to emphasize is we have a unique opportunity to do something big. we have a chance to stabilize america's finances for a decade. for 15 years, or 20 years, if we're willing to seize the moment. now, what that would require would be some shared sacrifice, and a balanced approach that says we're going to make significant cuts in domestic spending, and i have already said i am willing to take down domestic spending to the lowest percentage of our overall economy since dwight eisenhower. it also requires cuts in defense spending. and i've said that in addition to the $400 billion that we've already cut from the defense spending we're willing to look for hundreds of billions more. it would require us taking on health care spending. and that includes looking at medicare and finding ways that we can stabilize the system so that it is available, not just for this generation, but for future generations. and it would require revenues. it would require, even as we're asking the person who needs a student loan or the senior citizen or, you know, people -- veterans who are trying to get by o

house back to the table, back to talking about something big. now, look, we still got a long ways to go. it's a weekend of sales jobs going on right now that actually began last night when the president had the congressional democratic leadership over to start talking turkey. so that brings us to the other sticking point, the actual substance. everybody has to figure out what to cut. this isn't going to be as easy as folks think and both sides are moving toward a deal that would include a trigger to assure mutually destructive politically when it comes to the two big items being kicked to committees or joint committees and that's still being figured out, tax and entitlements. one incentive plan would kill bush tax cuts for the rich and key portions of the new health care law if somehow the reforms for the tax code and social security and medicare weren't agreed to and implemented by january 1st, 2013. the question is, is the penalty on the bush tax cuts sort of the idea that you're kicking this down, is that going to be enough to assuage some democrats who believe there's too many cuts

, alex. some good news for some. we're lessening the heat, pushing it further south with this big ridge now going to park itself over at least the central part of the u.s., where the heat and drought will continue. right over the state of texas even through wednesday, you can see this little dip in the jet stream. that brings some slightly cooler air, not as hot air into parts of the east here, but right by friday the ridge is going to build back in and we could see temperatures in the low to mid 90s. i certainly don't think any more 90 degree or 100-degree heat, excuse me, but we're still going to see hot stuff. the heat advisories, watches and warnings in effect basically from philly south along the coast and into the nation's midsection where this heat wave has taken the toll. right around two dozen fatalities, unfortunately, from this big heat wave. so it is a big story. and the other big story has been the rainfall here in and around places like chicago where we've had heavy rain, record rainfall yesterday. more problems. and the drought continues across the south, alex, where we w

by decisions four, five years ago, mostly by republican congress and president. it's like having a nice, big dinner with a few friends at the restaurant and then saying we're not going to pay the bill. that's what not raising the debt ceiling is. >> and when you look who we owe the money to, 44%, the biggest percentage of our debt is owed to the federal reserve, which is -- if we're going to not pay debt, instead of not paying social security or veterans, why not just pay the federal reserve since we're subsidizing the banking system anyway? >> you could do that but i gang ter wouldn't get you very far. it might get you a few days. the problem is that -- if you don't raise the debt ceiling shortly after august 2eneden the secretary of the treasury is faced with a choice of breaking the law. the question, which law? one law says the debt ceiling says you can't borrow to pay the bills. but the anti-impoundment act of 1974 says you must pay the bills and you must spend the money congress appropriated. you can't not spend that money. >> you must not -- like being told you must not think about th

. luke, what kind of response are lawmakers getting today on capitol hill? >> quite a big one, contessa. we can report that earlier this morning the house call center the communication arm of the house in charge of all the house telephones sent out an email to members saying quote, due to the high volume of external calls to the house telephone circuits they are near capacity. some members should be receiving busy signals. several house websites crashed specifically that of speaker of the house john boehner. the question is whether or not it will transfer into some sort of change of what the status quo is right now and that really is both sides digging in quite rigidly on their plans. democrats supporting harry reid's plan the $2.7 trillion cut across the board. republicans in favor of john boehner's plan, with an extension of the debt limit. that's where both sides are still very much. >> kristen, let's talk with you about where the white house goes from here. can they capitalize on this? the people are willing to go online -- i had trouble getting on the house website today maybe not

, just as he told you. you know, counsel showed you the big poster with the pictures of caylee walking into the pool and said that this hypothesis has not been rebutted. well, i respectfully disagree. because ladies and gentlemen, the two people that counsel asserts were present when that happened were george anthony and casey anthony. george anthony testified on that witness stand the first day of this trial it didn't happen. as ms. burdick will point out to you when she points, ms. anthony also was given the opportunity to adopt that and rejected it twice. that has been refuted. by the evidence in this case. counsel also asserted to you that this crime scene was quote-unquote staged. here's the interesting part. he tells you on the one hand that george anthony is connected to the tape. remember he said in opening, follow the tape. but then on the other hand, he tells you that roy kronk is connected to the tape. dr. spits told you that somebody came along later and took the skull and taped it and in opening statement, the defense counsel told you that person was roy kronk. so they bot
